The stigma of the disease kept people from discussing it publicly, and the anticipated prognosis was often assumed to be bleak. In recent years, however, as advances in research have led to more-effective treatments, patients are living longer and speaking louder, and cancer is increasingly considered a chronic condition that can be effectively managed for many years.
