IMAGES OF HOPE ➎ ❽ 5. DREAMA TRAVIS (LEFT) AND ❻ ❼ WENDELL SCANTERBURY, CHAPLAIN "You have cancer—inoperable and incur- able." The diagnosis lef me confused and dazed. Anxiety crept into my heart and eroded my peace of mind. A Bible verse from Corinthians brought me a measure of comfort: "Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and mo- mentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." Throughout my cancer journey, my faith has played an important role. Chaplain Wendell Scanterbury has helped to strengthen my faith and pick me up when I'm starting to get down. He doesn't just talk the talk, he walks the walk. When things seem like they just can't get any worse, I'll get an out-of-the-blue call from Wendell just to say hello and let me know he is praying for me. Although many miles separate us, it is comforting to know he is just a phone call away if I need anything at all. 6. KEN PRIEST (RIGHT) AND KIM KRAUSE, RESPIRATORY CARE PRACTITIONER Leaving my wife and son and the warmth of Florida for two months of radiation, during the winter, was a difficult decision. But Kim made the transition easier by introducing me to other employees and showing me around the area. In no time I cfthrive.com had met the hospital executive team. The biggest honor came when I was asked to cut the ribbon to open the new surgi- cal wing. Everywhere I went in the hospital, I was greeted by helpful, smiling faces. Afer 35 years in the health care field, I have never experienced integrative care utilized so completely for improvement of patient well-being. Kim started me on the road to recovery and I will be forever grateful to her and all the stakeholders of CTCA. 7. RHONDA SHACKLEFORD ULMER WITH HER CHILDREN My name is Rhonda. I am a sin- gle mother of three, and I have cancer. I've attended CTCA in Philadelphia for treatment with Dr. Rudolph Willis for the past two years for liposarcoma and carcinoid cancer. Liposarcoma is a very rare cancer that only 8,000 people are diagnosed with a year. Pictured with me in this photo are my three chil- dren: Breanna (17), Jordan (13) and Ta'Nia (11). Believe it or not children are caregivers too! My children are so special to me because they give me the reason to be a Cancer Fighter each day. 8. DENISE ROBINSON (RIGHT) WITH KELLY DULANEY, CNA This is a picture of me and Kelly. Kelly was always gentle, caring, and very helpful. She always had an answer to any of my questions and gave me welcome guidance. summer 2012 | cancer fighters thrive 45
