4 C A NCER FIGH T ER S THRI V E | sUMMER 20 15 C A NCERFIGHTER S THRI V E .COM If you're facing a cancer diagnosis, the road ahead will include significant mile markers—points along the way where you will make decisions about treatment and about how the diagnosis will impact your life beyond the hospital. It's our hope that Cancer Fighters Thrive® will be a valu- able source of information to help you make these decisions thoughtfully, empowering you in your journey. No matter your diagnosis, learning about current treatment and research related to your cancer type can help you make informed decisions about your care. In this issue we cover current research in our regular "Research Today" column, highlight advances in esophageal cancer treatment and hear from Giuseppe Del Priore, MD, MPH, National Director of Gynecologic Oncology & Southeastern Regional Director at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® about research efforts related to gynecologic cancers. As you learn about your diagnosis and treatment options, it's important to discuss all potential side effects of treatment with your care team. This issue includes a feature about innovations in care that are helping reduce the inci- dence of secondary cancers that can result from treatment, as well as a piece describing the reality of weight gain during treatment—and offering insight from patients about effective strategies for maintaining health and losing weight. Just as becoming informed about your treatment and potential side effects can help you navigate decisions about care, learning about resources that can help you manage the physical and emotional impact of your diagnosis is also important. For some patients, integrative modalities, including acupuncture, can help with physical side effects and with stress relief. We take a look at current re- search related to acupuncture as a beneficial integrative therapy in this issue and also highlight spiritual ministry and therapeutic writing. Specific mile markers along this road will vary for each patient and fam- ily, and each will make individual choices about how to proceed at each point. But for all patients and families, information can provide a welcome roadmap and guide.
